Decision Lab: Defining Agile Market Research In The Digital Age

the forefront of digital marketing measurment

The making of agile marketing professionals

Graduating from the two-week intensive training boot camp and soon getting everyday hands-on experience with real-life projects, I have come to the realization of how much we freshers can get out of this trainee program.

Each MRC member will be closely mentored by their manager to walk through full project management cycle and get exposed to various tasks that require practical application of methods and agile solutions.

On top of that, forget about such market research stereotypes – you will find no boring data-crunching geeks or statistical nerds here. This is a true hub of cool, smart, ambitious and party peeps in Saigon!

Nguyen Thi Thien An

The MRC program was communicated very thoroughly and transparently from the beginning, giving me a clear idea of what to expect and prepare.

I also got to learn about the functions
and organizations of each team in the company, which helped me narrow the options that best fit my interests.

1. Is this job open to part-time working students?

This is a full-time position tailored to final year students, recent graduates, or young professionals with a few years of working experience.

If you are a part-time working student, you are still eligible to join the program, and we recommended you to apply for the Associate level. In fact, we had a case of a final year student who was finishing her dissertation while working with us. Hence, it is definitely applicable to working students but not part-time.

2. What if my major is irrelevant to the job requirements?

We welcome applicants from any business-related majors in general, because we really think that your college major doesn't matter that much, as long as you are indeed passionate and interested in market research.

3. Is this an annual program?

In fact, this program is organized twice a year, during which intakes are held in the summer and winter every year. Unlike other training/ recruitment programs, this program is very flexible and allows accepted candidates to choose their preferred starting dates. In short, you can apply for the summer intake and start your first-day in office in the winter.

Having said that, we highly recommend accepted candidates to start immediately after getting accepted. The sooner you join the training, the more experience you'll get.

4. How many rounds in total do I need to pass to get into the program?

The first round that you’ll need to pass is common for whichever job you apply, which is the resume and cover letter, so we will screen applicants first through this process.

After that, you will have to do an online test, which will test how much you are actually suitable for market research (logic, math, essay, etc..).

Finally, there will be two rounds of interviews with your future peers and our co-founders. In total, there are four rounds.

5. Is this job located in Ho Chi Minh city? Can a person outside of Ho Chi Minh city apply to work?

The answer is yes. Decision Lab’s office is located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. We have always welcomed talents from across Vietnam and overseas. In fact, more than half of your future colleagues are from places like Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Copenhagen, New Delhi, Manila, just to name a few.

The good news is, for candidates who live outside Ho Chi Minh City, we offer a one-month relocation support package so that you could have more time to find proper accommodations.

6. How will the test be conducted, especially for those who live outside Ho Chi Minh City?

After receiving your application, if qualified, we will invite you to take an online assessment to evaluate your logical thinking and writing skills. If successfully passed the online test, you would be invited to the second round of face-to-face interviews with Decision Lab's consultants and co-founders.

For candidates who live outside Ho Chi Minh City, we'll conduct the online interviews via Skype, which we have done successfully in the past.

7. How many teams are there for rotation?

The four main teams at Decision Lab are Foodservice, Digital Measurement, Deciders, and Online Community. You'll learn in-depth about their functionalities during the training program.

Our main goal in this program is to give you maximum exposure to all Decision Lab's products and services. Therefore, you'll sure be rotated. Depending on your aptitude and career orientations, sometimes you can stay a bit longer in one team than the others.

8. What are the urgent/current needs of each team (workload, project planning...)?

All of our teams are now in urgent needs of talented people who can provide creative solutions and execute them well. During the training courses, you will be able to identify the focused business areas of Decision Lab and how you'll help the company in the long run, not just in urgent cases.

9. What is the maximum number of accepted candidates every year?

We are looking for an ideal number of 5 - 10 exceptional candidates on each intake, so 10 - 20 people annually. However, it's the quality of the candidates that drives the success of the program, not the number. We rarely compromise on this matter.

10. Will there be any elimination during the training or after that?

So far, we haven't eliminated anyone during and after the training. We have always worked very hard during our assessments to prevent this case. Nevertheless, there were cases that people stopped right after the training program.

In most of the cases, people stopped not because of their performance during the training, but their attitude toward the program changed. Some just found that their characteristics could not fit the job after a few weeks. Therefore, we highly recommend you to take a careful self-assessment before applying for this program.

11. I had some working experience in a different field, now I want to change my career path. Will I be qualified for MRC?

If you have worked for a few years, you are advised to join the Consultant level, which is designed for young professionals from 24 years old. Regardless of your past experiences, we believe that your attitude toward the challenges and the ability to learn are the recipes for success.

12. How does the mrc program differ from other entry level roles in market research?

The MRC program will provide you with training and exposure to various tasks that will challenge and allow you to take initiatives, definitely not making coffee and running errands. So you will learn a lot even just starting as an associate and mature quickly through the opportunities and requirements to be proactive, responsible, and analytical with your tasks.

13. If I do not meet your requirements, can I still apply?

We encourage you to still apply. We welcome applicants from various backgrounds with interest and the willingness to learn about market research.

14. Can I apply if I was unsuccessful in the previous intake application process?

You absolutely can. In fact, your persistence and drive to join Decision Lab for the 2nd time is a big plus for your application. One of our current consultants was hired after her 2nd application attempt at the MRC program.

15. What is the format of 1st and 2nd interviews?

Peer-to-peer interview:
You will have a small chat with 1-2 members of the Decision Lab team. This informal conversation aims to help us find out more about you and your personality to see if you are right for us. It also works both ways: it is a chance for you to assess if we are the right company for you. Once we notify you the outcome of the interview, you can proceed into the final interview.
Final interview:
You will have an interview with one of our cofounders/directors (Thue or Aske) and one member of the Decision Lab team. The interview consists of 3 parts: case study analysis, case study presentation, and a face-to-face interview. It aims to assess your analytical competency, presentation skills and your attitude to see if you and Decision Lab are truly a perfect match.
