What does the ideal workplace look like for Vietnamese employees?

62% Of Vietnamese employees prefer hybrid working mode, according to new data from a thought leadership report by The Sentry and Decision Lab.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted traditional ways of working and forced many employees and employers to adapt to new modes of work. The pandemic may no longer be a big concern, but it has changed the employee’s idea of an ideal work environment.

“The Future of Work” is a thought leadership report by The Sentry and Decision Lab, based on surveys with over 500 employees from various industries and generations in Vietnam. The report uncovered the drivers behind employees’ choice of workplace, their definition of an ideal workplace, and their perception of new trends in the workplace. Employers, managers, and HR professionals who want to create a more attractive, productive, and sustainable workplace for their talent can find valuable insights from this report.

The learning curve is the top priority when choosing the workplace

We asked the respondents about important aspects of choosing a workplace. 47% of employees said learning opportunities is the top priority, followed by “company culture” and “income & benefits” with both 46%.

While Gen Z looks for learning opportunities to develop themselves, half of Gen Y consider income and other benefits the top essentials. This could be because Gen Z (14 - 26 years old) are still in the early stages of their careers and want to develop themselves. On the other hand, Gen Y (27 - 42 years old) have mostly established their careers and have more financial concerns.

Comfort is the key to an ideal workplace.

61% Of employees said “comfortable tables and chairs” is the top 1 element creating an ideal office. Also, “comfortable” is the first keyword that comes to mind when they are asked to describe an ideal office. These keywords reflect the employees’ desire for a workplace that can provide them with physical comfort, psychological satisfaction, and intellectual stimulation.

Vietnamese employees are also optimistic about future trends in the workplace, like the application of AI, robots, or VR/AR. They see these trends as opportunities rather than threats, as they can enhance their productivity, efficiency, and innovation. However, they are more nervous about AI than other developments. They may worry that AI could replace their jobs or make them obsolete.

Commenting on the data Thue Quist Thomasen, CEO of Decision Lab, said:

“It is my pleasure to present the Future of Work report by The Sentry and Decision Lab. This report reveals the preferences, expectations, and aspirations of Vietnamese employees in the post-pandemic era. The report shows that hybrid working mode is the most favored option among employees, as it offers them the best of both worlds: flexibility and collaboration. The report also indicates that only 9% of employees said they only like working remotely, which suggests that people still value the social and professional benefits of going to offices. I hope this report will provide valuable insights and recommendations for employers, managers, and HR professionals who want to create a more attractive, productive, and sustainable workplace for their talent.”
